Record Video Ipad Sync With Garageband
Posted : admin On 02.01.2021Oct 11, 2015 The Focusrite 18i20 has MIDI so I suppose MIDI sync is the way to go if Garageband supports it. Basically I want the Mac to act as a traditional multitrack tape recording studio with a mixer and effects, and have the ability to sync those tracks to a MIDI sequencer. May 02, 2014 Option 1: I create a video using quicktime or photoboth and record at the same time into garageband, I merge the files together and sync them up. The problem with this is, photo both wants to record audio at the same time as garageband, which overloads the driver I. Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.
I am having a sync issue: see picture. I play in reality ON the beat but the recording is BEFORE the beat. I have iPad Air 2 with ios 8.2.
Tried it with several setups: inapp, audiobus, with iRig Keys and without, it all records before the beat. Hmmm..what is the matter here? I don't think I had this issue with my iPad 3. Is there some sort of dysfunctional correction?
So I have to drag the whole track a bit to the right to get it in sync! Not happy.

Are you monitoring through the ipad? I'm guessing but I'd say it's probably because you're compensating for the lag while you're recording. The latency is making everything you're playing sound late (behind the beat) so you're playing ahead of the beat to compensate. It sounds in time when you're monitoring but is actually recording early.
I have the same problem if I'm recording with a synth app into something like Loopy. Each track I record will be slightly out of time with the last. Lowering the latency can help reduce the problem but the only real solution I can see is using an external sound source and monitor that directly while tracking.

Hey thatsRayor (I bought that King Crimson album in the seventies )
Interesting what you write. But I think your hypothesis is wrong, but really thanks for giving it a thought
I don't compensate while I play. The recording is a lot before the beat (see picture below). I have more than 40 years experience with keyplaying so I know when I play on the beat.On the other hand: my doubtfull side says: perhaps I do compensate and I am not aware of it. Hmmm..overall view is stil that I don't compensate while playing. And it must be a lot of compensate playing to get the amount of 'off beatness' in the picture below.
Just tested this on my Air 2/8.2 with a beat from Garageband on the first track, and then Thor bassline recorded onto an audio track via Audiobus. No timing issues at all.

I did the same thing as you (Air 2/8.2 audiobus, thor, garageband audio track) but stll the same timing issue: recording is before the beat.
Is it a weird spot in my mind or something wrong with the equipment?
Edit: Btw I have the same issue in Auria
I'll try it via Auria later - might be worth updating the iOS now the new version is available.
Hey Marcel,
Yeah you're right, that's far too ahead of the beat to be caused by latency. Looks like maybe ~100ms (yikes!). Are you monitoring through headphones? Is there anything weird in your listening setup that might be contributing?
I did a test with iGrand into Garageband and didn't have any problem, but that's on an Air 1 7.1.2. Out of interest I tried recording while monitoring and then without monitoring (just tapping the keyboard in time with the metronome) and compared the difference. The latter was just slightly behind the beat (as you'd expect) but nowhere near what you're experiencing.
Love the Crimson pretty amazing they're still doing it after almost 50 years!
Please help!!! Having the same issue!!! You are the first person i have come across this issue. Did you resolve it? My iPad 2 does not have this issue. I got an i pad air and had this issue. I went back and forth with apple, returned the device when they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I bought another one and had the same issue happen!!! Is it possible my garageband is infecting the devices? I am at a total loss. Help!!!
If I understand correctly what you want: when that issue occurs I usually try getting GB recording and then just start the source playback at some point right after; once you've recorded you can slide that GB blue audio bar back & forth to where you need it to start.
you should not need to do this. plus it really messes with my work flow. it is the weirdest thing..do you have the same issue?
I still have the same issue. In Daw Multitrack it seems less. However when I record in GB I arrange a free space before the recording (so the first note is still recorded) and after recording I drag the track by hand to sync it proper. Its totally NOT nice, but its the way it is.
it's not systemic. we seek to be cursed. have you tried using another i pad in as an instrument instead of using inter-app or audiobus? using an interface to connect the two iPads? i am out of town but want to try this when I get back.

No haven't tried that, i have 2 iPads (air 2 and ipad 3) but I dont know how to connect them and I dont understand what the possible benefit of such a connection could be. Also: I like to record guitar via iPad, and I cant do that if another iPad occupies the input slot.
if you had an interface with a quarter inch input you could use an adapter and go out the eighth inch headphone jack on the i pad and into the interface. from the interface you would go into the iPad that is recording. you could use the first iPad as an instument and use the piano app you had the issue with. was curious if this would produce the same result or not.

I have a rudimentary work flow, so I don't have a great number of considerations (i.e. multiple AB routings & outboard gear to sync or even an instrument to play) and I'm still quite happy with the capabilities this iPhone5 provides.

The Android Emulators may work but won’t function properly.
Installation of Mac Sierra OSX
