NTFS-3G performance vs Paragon's NTFS for Mac
Previously, I was using NTFS-3G (april 2008 release) with MacFUSE for NTFS read / write operations. However, it was sooo terrible slow that I couldn't bare it anymore as I use external USB storage for multiple VM images.
Having removed NTFS-3G (using the uninstall script), rebooted, install Paragon's NTFS for Mac, rebooted...and now all my external USB NTFS read / write operations are flying again! Reading a 2.1GB file from the 2.5inch USB drive only took 77 seconds with the average transfer rate around 28-29 MB/s...something that I couldn't achieve with NTFS-3G.
I didn't change anything other than the NTFS driver. Still using the same Macbook, same OS X 10.5.2, same usb drive, same partition, same USB port on the Macbook, same cable.
So, question is, why is NTFS-3G so slow? Or is it MacFUSE?

Sorry, I can't guess what release you mean by 'april 2008 release'. There are many packages made by several developers for OS X.
The most typical problem is not using the right package and device. I get over 30 MB/sec with external USB and over 60 MB/sec with internal SATA disks on Linux. The OS X values (if the driver and the device are used correctly) are reported to be lower by only a few MB/sec.

Ah, sorry, it's the 1.2310 release that was released in March but I didn't download and install it until April...got the dates confused.
Downloaded the DMG package.

Thanks, but I've read that UBLIO is labeled as experimental. Is there any stable release with caching enabled out there?

It was indeed experimental a year ago but we are not aware of any problems for a long time.

Perfect!! So it's safe to say that it's pretty stable then?

  • Oct 28, 2016  Tuxera NTFS 2016.1 Tuxera NTFS is a commercial NTFS driver developed from the popular open-source NTFS-3G driver, which is a natural part of all major Linux distributions, and also has lots of users on Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris, and NetBSD.
  • From Tuxera vs Paragon comparison table, Paragon NTFS is revealed to be the best NTFS software compatible to all OS X version including the new MacOS Sierra. It effectively makes Mac users able to fully either read or write to NTFS Partitions mounted by USBs or External Hard Drives formatted to NTFS file system.
  • Before that, Paragon NTFS cost $100. Now Paragon was forced to lower to $19.95 (but that's per-computer, and then you still need to pay its upgrade-costs for every computer every year, haha). Tuxera NTFS for Mac is only 25 EUR ($31) as a life-time license for 1 person on as many computers as you own (unlimited)! That means free upgrades on as many computers as you want!

It's known to all that macOS has limited support for NTFS drive - that is, you can only read from NTFS but not write or delete anything, which causes the inconvenience to use drive between Windows and Mac. Fortunately, plenty of NTFS for Mac apps that can help you read and write to NTFS drive exist in the market. This article will show you top 5 NTFS Apps for macOS Mojave/High Sierra. Try these and you will not be disappointed.

1. NTFS Assistant

NTFS Assistant is the cheapest NTFS for Mac utility in App Store. With NTFS Assistant, getting access to NTFS drive on Mac is a piece of cake. You are able to view, delete files, transfer files from Mac to NTFS drive and rename folders and files. NTFS Assistant is compatible with macOS Catalina/Mojave/High Sierra/Sierra and Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11/Yosemite 10.10/Mavericks 10.9/Mountain Lion 10.8.

Pros:

1. Cheap.

2. Easy-to-use.

Cons:

1. Only available in App Store.

2. A plug-in needs to be installed. Before writing to NTFS drive on Mac, you have to download and install NTFS Assistant Helper from iBoysoft official site.

2. iBoysoft Drive Manager

iBoysoft Drive Manager is a professional NTFS mounter that allows you write to NTFS drive on macOS Catalina 10.15/Mojave 10.14/High Sierra 10.13/Sierra 10.12 and Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11/Yosemite 10.10/Mavericks 10.9/Mountain Lion 10.8. iBoysoft Drive Manager can not only mount NTFS drives, but also mount FAT32 and exFAT drives.
